Post –Doctoral Appointment: Global Futures Project
The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an agricultural economist at the post doctoral level for the Global Futures project. He/she will be based at CIP Headquarters in Lima, Peru.
The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research organization with a global mandate to conduct research on genetic resources of potatoes, sweetpotatoes, and other Andean roots and tubers, crop genetic enhancement and improvement, integrated crop management and sustainable management of natural resources. CIP’s vision is to contribute from its areas of expertise to the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular those Goals that relate to poverty, hunger, child and maternal mortality, and sustainable development. CIP has its headquarters in Lima, Peru with staff and activities in locations across Africa, Asia and Latin America. CIP is a member of the Alliance of the CGIAR Centers, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 60 donor members.
The Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Impact Enhancement Division, the successful applicant will join a team of researchers to enhance the ex ante research evaluation capabilities of CIP and the CGIAR. This research involves extensive revision to a widely respected partial equilibrium model of world agriculture written in GAMS to increase its spatial resolution, developing links to general equilibrium models, adding explicit land use modeling, and implementing theoretically rigorous welfares measures. The individual will conduct original research as well as provide research, communications, and writing support to the other members of the research team; and will work in consultation with IMPACT model developers at IFPRI on enhancing the IMPACT model (the IMPACT Improvement Task).

The successful candidate will have:
• Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Applied Economics, Earth Systems, Natural Resource Management, Public Policy or other relevant fields.
• Knowledge of mathematical modeling methods and complementary econometric techniques, with applied programming skills of these methods.
• Strong knowledge and experience with partial- and general-equilibrium economic models.
• Experience in incorporating important environmental factors such as carbon sequestration, climate, land quality and water availability, into economic policy models.
• Knowledge of spatial economics and GIS.
• Facility with processing and analyzing data on climate, soils and water.
• Outstanding ability to perform thoughtful, critical analyses of own as well as existing research.
• Ability to work with researchers from other sciences and backgrounds.
• Experience and demonstrated excellence in written and oral presentations.
Conditions: The employment contract will be for an initial one-year term with possibility of renewal. Salary is internationally competitive and paid in US dollars.
